Otters sweep twinbill in Turlock to move within 1/2 game of first in CCAA standings

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 TURLOCK, Calif. – The 12th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team (33-12, 25-10) clinched the program's first CCAA Championship berth with a pair of wins against Cal State Stanislaus Saturday at Warrior Field.  The Otters extended their win streak to nine with scores of 10-1 and 7-3.

With two Chico State losses, the Otters are now a half-a-game back behind CCAA leader Cal State L.A.  The Otters and Golden Eagles have earned a trip to Stockton for the 2013 CCAA Championship on May 9-12. The final two spots are still up for grabs between Chico State, Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego.

The Otters posted six-run innings in both games while hitting .397 and keeping the Warrior offense to a .213 batting average.

Senior Jesse Olson (Citrus Heights/Sierra College) and junior Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) went 5-for-8 with two runs to guide the Otters to their seventh series win.

CSUMB concludes the series against the Warriors on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.

GAME 1: CSUMB 10, CAL STATE STANISLAUS 1
The Otters produced 10 runs on 17 hits that included four doubles to grab the doubleheader opener from the Warriors.

Behind a 2-1 lead, the Otter offense exploded in the fourth with six runs on five hits. The first six Otters reached base safely on four hits and two walks.  Senior Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister/San Benito HS) and Hurley drove in a run each while senior David Garcia (Gilroy/Mission College) and junior Jason Brady (Campbell/West Valley College) followed with a pair of RBIs.

Senior Brian Haggett (Hollister/West Valley College) notched his 13th double to score the final two runs in the 10-1 win.

Junior Chris Daniels (Citrus Heights/Sierra College) (6-3) recorded the win after five innings of work.  He gave up only one run on six hits and five walks while striking out three batters. Junior Josh Eagle (Antioch/Sierra College) nabbed his first save following four scoreless innings.

GAME 2: CSUMB 7, CAL STATE STANISLAUS 3
Sophomore Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) picked up his 10th win in his fifth complete game despite a three-run fourth-inning hiccup. The right-hander fanned six and gave up three hits.

The Otters once again took the lead with a run in the first on a Hurley single that plated senior Victor Rasor-Thompson (San Diego/Univ. of San Diego) who led off the game with a single.

CSUMB found itself down for the first time in the Otter-Warrior series when Stanislaus posted three runs in the fourth on its only three hits of the game and a CSUMB error.

But the Otter bats were not ready to be silent as CSUMB had a bit of déjà vu in the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits and a Warrior error.
