SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay Head Coach
Rob Bishop literally went to one of the four corners of the country to find his (big) man, inking 6–8, 220 freshman
Isaiah Smith (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) to a national letter of intent.
Called a, “double–double machine” by sports writer Paul Valencia of
The Columbian, Smith set the Columbia River High career scoring record (1,605 points) and earned
The Columbian's All–Region Player of the Year recognition. He finished his senior season by scoring a school–record 517 points and averaging 21.5 points per game, reaching double figures 23 times in 24 contests. Included in that total was a school–record 42–point performance in a Nov. 26, 2012 win over Evergreen High School.
Smith was a four–year starter at Columbia River, earning first team All–Greater St. Helen's League recognition as sophomore and junior before being named the league's MVP as a senior in 2013. In his final two prep seasons he led the Chieftains to the GSHL and District 6 titles while taking the 2013 Chieftains to the Sweet 16 of the Washington Class 3A State Championships.
An honors student in high school with a 3.8 grade point average, Smith plans on majoring in business administration with a concentration in finance at CSUMB. His long term plans include attending graduate school.
Smith is a native of Portland, Ore., and is the son of Eric Smith and Mary Kay Evans–Smith. His father played collegiately at George Fox College and still ranks among the school's all–time leaders in field goal accuracy.
