CSUMB wins eleventh straight home game, attains first-ever 30 win season

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, CALIF.—The record books for the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team continue to be rewritten this season.  No. 28 CSUMB completed a four-game sweep of visiting CCAA foe Cal Poly Pomona with a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The win secured a program first 30-win campaign. CSUMB (30-12, 22-10 CCAA) is now just a game behind Cal State L.A. for second place in the CCAA standings. CPP fell to 16-20 in conference play.

Senior Tommy George (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove HS) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to help lead the Otters to the series sweep. Senior Jason Merjano (San Ramon, Calif./Sierra College) also enjoyed a solid afternoon at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Strong starting pitching carried the Otters throughout the series. Senior Jordan Helmkamp (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Saddleback College) (4-0) picked up the win as he continued the starting rotation's groove with a dominant seven shutout innings. CSUMB's starting pitching combined for a stingy 2.25 ERA in 28 innings of work over the weekend.

The top of the Otter lineup set the tone for this game early. Victor Rasor-Thompson (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego), Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) and Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./West Valley College)  each hit safely off of CPP starter Ryan Dunn (4-2) to begin the game. CSUMB rallied to score three runs in the frame.

More offense came in the fifth, highlighted by a Merjano two-out two RBI double that scored Mark Hurley (Hollister, Calif./College of San Mateo) and George. All told, CSUMB extended their lead to 7-0.

CPP tested the Otters late, scoring five runs in the final two frames. Junior A.J. Quintero (Vacaville, Calif./Sacramento City College) got the out that counted as he struck out Andrew Stein, the potential tying run to end the game.

The Otters continue conference play next weekend with a four-game split series versus Cal State Stanislaus. The opener is on Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
