Otter starting pitcher Jordan Helmkamp picked up his fourth win of the season on Sunday afternoon.
BOX SCORE SEASIDE, CALIF.—The record books for the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team continue to be rewritten this season. No. 28 CSUMB completed a four-game sweep of visiting CCAA foe Cal Poly Pomona with a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The win secured a program first 30-win campaign. CSUMB (30-12, 22-10 CCAA) is now just a game behind Cal State L.A. for second place in the CCAA standings. CPP fell to 16-20 in conference play.
Senior
Tommy George (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove HS) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to help lead the Otters to the series sweep. Senior
Jason Merjano (San Ramon, Calif./Sierra College) also enjoyed a solid afternoon at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Strong starting pitching carried the Otters throughout the series. Senior
Jordan Helmkamp (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Saddleback College) (4-0) picked up the win as he continued the starting rotation's groove with a dominant seven shutout innings. CSUMB's starting pitching combined for a stingy 2.25 ERA in 28 innings of work over the weekend.
The top of the Otter lineup set the tone for this game early.
Victor Rasor-Thompson (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego),
Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister, Calif.
/San Benito HS) and
Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./West Valley College) each hit safely off of CPP starter Ryan Dunn (4-2) to begin the game. CSUMB rallied to score three runs in the frame.
More offense came in the fifth, highlighted by a Merjano two-out two RBI double that scored
Mark Hurley (Hollister, Calif./College of San Mateo) and George. All told, CSUMB extended their lead to 7-0.
CPP tested the Otters late, scoring five runs in the final two frames. Junior
A.J. Quintero (Vacaville, Calif./Sacramento City College) got the out that counted as he struck out Andrew Stein, the potential tying run to end the game.
The Otters continue conference play next weekend with a four-game split series versus Cal State Stanislaus. The opener is on Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
