BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 28 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team raised its home win streak to 10 with a doubleheader sweep against Cal Poly Pomona Saturday by scores of 10-2 and 7-3.
The Otters continue to add to their school record for wins with a 29-12 overall record. A 21-10 conference record puts CSUMB three games back on leader Chico State (24-7 CCAA) and in third place behind Cal State L.A. (23-8 CCAA) in the CCAA standings.
On Saturday, junior
Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) had four hits including a triple and his third home run of the season. Seniors
Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister/San Benito HS), Brian Haggett (Hollister/West Valley College) and
David Garcia (Gilroy/Mission College) each added three hits apiece.
The Otters conclude their four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, April 21 at 11 a.m.
GAME 1: CSUMB 10, CPP 2
Senior
Victor Rasor-Thompson got the CSUMB offense rolling with a leadoff double to left center, advanced 90 feet on a balk and scored on a fielder's choice to put the Otters up 1-0.
A two-out dropped ball by the Broncos gave CSUMB three runs and Hurley followed with a RBI triple to make it 5-0 Otters.
After a Bronco run in the sixth, CSUMB put together two runs in both the bottom of the frame and the next one that included a two-run homer by Hurley.
Junior starter
Will Anderson (Pleasanton/Fresno State) (7-2) fanned five batters and gave up only one earned run in his seven innings of work to earn the win. CPP's Kevin Bosson was handed the loss after relinquishing five runs – only one earned – on six hits and season-high five walks.
GAME 2: CSUMB 7, CPP 3
CSUMB jumped out to another 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Broncos rallied to even the score in the top of the third.
The Otters steadily built up a comfortable lead with runs in the next three innings by counting down 3-2-1. The third frame was highlighted by a 2 RBI
Jason Merjano (San Ramon/Sierra College) triple to the right corner.
Sophomore
Jeff Owen (Clovis East) earned his ninth win of the season to put him on top of the CCAA statistic chart. The right-hander gave up a uncharacteristic 10 hits in six innings but struck out seven batters while walking none.
