The CSUMB men’s basketball Class of 2013 with families on senior night in The Kelp Bed.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team opened each of the final three weeks of the 2012–13 season with grueling overtime games. In each case, the spent Otters fell in the final game of the week.
Such was the case Friday night, as the Otters couldn't rally following Thursday's frenetic 90–88 overtime win over Cal State Stanislaus and fell to visiting Chico State 91–60 on senior night in The Kelp Bed.
Seniors
Brandon Ward (Riverside/Woodcrest HS) and
Derrick Anderson (Pittsburg HS) led the Otters, finishing with 11 and 10 points respectively. Ward also chipped in five assists. Seniors
James Albert (San Bernardino/Canyon HS) and
Kevin Loustale (Chico/Shasta HS) followed close behind with nine and eight points respectively.
The Wildcats were simply too hot early, shooting 65 percent from the field—including 9–-for–18 from beyond the arc—to race to a 53–28 halftime lead. The Otters tried to respond by pounding the ball inside, but that netted them just one free throw opportunity in the first 36 minutes of play as Loustale, Albert and Anderson paid the price.
In addition to Ward and Anderson, freshman
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) reached double figures by scoring 10 points. Drew Kitchens came off the bench to lead five Wildcats in double figures with 14 points.
Despite Friday's setback, CSUMB finishes its season 9–20 overall and 5–17 in the CCAA, more than doubling its win totals from last season. With a talented young core of returning players around which to build, Head Coach
Rob Bishop and his staff have the Otters moving in the right direction as the April signing period approaches.
GO OTTERS!
