CSUMB drops first game of 2013

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. –  A three-run eighth inning proved to be not enough as the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team saw its season-opening win streak come to an end at four Friday afternoon. The Otters fell 8-7 to the Central Washington Wildcats.

Senior Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./West Valley) posted his second consecutive three-hit game, driving in a run while scoring twice. Senior Victor Rasor-Thompson (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego) and junior Mark Hurley (Hollister, Calif./College of San Mateo) each contributed two hits apiece.

After the Wildcats posted a single run in the first, they concluded their scoring with seven runs in the third.  A combination of relievers Collin Monagle (Port Orchard, Wash./Sierra College), Jonas Noack (San Diego, Calif./UOP) and Rickey Guerrero III (Stockton, Calif./Delta College) limited CWU to just six hits and no runs in the final six innings.

The Otters got on the board in the third on a two-out two-RBI double by Rasor-Thompson. CSUMB added two runs in the sixth, scoring on a David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Misson College) sacrifice fly and a ground out by Cody Gappa (Corning, Calif./Feather River College).

In the eighth, the Otters cut the Wildcat lead to one run.  Rasor-Thompson led off with a single up the middle and scored on a double by Haggett.  After doubling to plate Haggett, Hurley scored after advancing on a passed ball and ground out.

Four different Wildcats produced two hits with Joe Castro registering two runs and two RBIs.CWU's Skye Adam picked up the win and Tyler Roberts got the save.

The Otters finish their four-game series against Central Washington with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 9. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
