SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team got 22 points from junior swingman Ryan Nitz (Rancho Cucamonga/Chaffey College), converted 45 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-20) and turned the ball over a season–low 13 times Tuesday night. But good wasn't good enough to stop red-hot Dominican University from improving to a school record-setting 6-0 with an 86-76 win over the Otters in The Conlan Center.

CSUMB (2–1) stayed well within reach of the Penguins, but Dominican out–scored the Otters 21–9 from the free–throw line, making 8-of-8 down the stretch to hold off the last chance at an Otter rally.

The Otters never led Tuesday night, though they kept the deficit in the four to nine point range for most of the game. But Dominican, which shot 52 percent from the field, made big shots and knocked down clutch free throws every time the Otters seemed poised to draw even.

In addition to Nitz, Devin Murphy (Sacramento/Sierra College) scored 12 points and Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) chipped in 10. Myles Carrillo led Dominican with 21 points while Devin Golston added a 19-point, 10-rebound double–double.

CSUMB will take the weekend off to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action for its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal State L.A. Friday, Dec. 6 in The Kelp Bed.
