Junior Alberto Anguiano scores his second game-winning goal of 2013 in 2-1 win over CSUSB.
BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – Junior
Alberto Anguiano's (Oxnard/Pacifica HS) goal in the 83rd minute broke a 1-1 tie and put the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team ahead 2-1 over visiting Cal State San Bernardino Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
With the win, CSUMB (6-3-1, 4-3-1 CCAA) take sole possession of first place in the CCAA North Division after Sonoma State suffered a 5-0 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The game-winner came from a composed give and go between Anguiano and
Max Madrigal (Oxnard HS) in the middle of the park that Anguiano finished past a diving CSUSB keeper Jeff Salt.
"It was another hard fought conference game," said CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Cummings. "I thought that in the first half we came out with some good flow to the game. For some reason, we just lost the flow and they capitalized on our lack of focus.
CSUSB got on the board first in the 38th minute when Lee Nishanian's volley found the back of the net on a pass by Tyler Schoenfeld.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead into the break with a 13-10 shot advantage.
"In the second half I was proud of how we stuck with our game plan and were able to put two goals in," Cummings said. "In this conference you have to come ready to play every game or your going to get beat."
CSUMB's equalizer didn't come until the 66th minute. Junior
Julian Salas (Long Beach/Lakewood HS) played a ball into the box from the right side that freshman
Chris Koski (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS) headed home for his second goal of the season.
The Otters notched 15 shots, tying their highest total against a CCAA opponent this season, compared to 20 for the Coyotes.
Sophomore
Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS) tied his career-best with eight saves. Ten different Otters recorded shots with Anguiano leading the pack with three.
"San Bernardino is a good team," Cummings said. "We will enjoy this today and tomorrow turn our attention to two big north division road matches with Sonoma State and Humboldt State."
The Otters take to the road, facing Sonoma State on Friday, Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m. and Humboldt State on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m.
