Otters celebrate after Servando Perez's golden goal vs. CSUEB.

CSUMB earns victory over visiting Cal State East Bay

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – Senior Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Righetti HS) scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute to lift Cal State Monterey Bay past visiting Cal State East Bay 2-1 in overtime in a CCAA men's soccer match Sunday afternoon.

"We played with grit today," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. "I thought we played well at times considering we were missing some key players. I thought we were able to show our depth and the younger players were able to contribute with a big win."

With the win, the Otters (8-4-2, 6-4-2 CCAA) continue to lead the CCAA North Division with a two-point lead over second place Sonoma State.  The Pioneers dropped to 3-10-1 overall and 3-8-1 in conference play.

A classy left footed chip shot over the CSUEB keeper provided the Otters with the overtime victory as well as Perez's sixth goal of the season. The goal moves Perez into third in the CSUMB season record books alongside Kyle Millerick (2004) and Andrew Burkhammer (2007).

The Pioneers got on the board first when Javier Martin knocked the ball across the line after confusion five yards out in the 11 minute.

CSUMB answered less than two minutes later when senior Juan Montellano (Fresno/Central HS) slipped the ball under the Pioneer keeper, sending it to the far post to make it 1-1. Perez picked up the assist on the goal.

The Otters were outshot 12-8 with eight of the Pioneers shots coming in the first half.  CSUMB held a 9-5 edge on corner kicks.

The Otters make their only trip to south next weekend, stopping at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Oct. 25 before heading to UC San Diego on Sunday, Oct. 27.
