SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams capped one of the top regular seasons in program history by posting more personal record–setting times at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara University Saturday at Baylands Park. Not only did the Otters run fast, but five of them were accepted into the prestigious invitational section of the meet, a first for the Otters.
In the women's invitational, sophomore
Hannah Bell (Yorba Linda/Esperanza HS) broke the 22–minute mark in the 6K, finishing 59th out of 204 competitors in 21:42.6. Freshman
Jessica McIntyre (Los Alamitos HS) just missed the 22–minute mark herself by finishing in 106th place with a time of 22:06.8. Junior
Jennie Yeaman (Escondido/Mission Hills HS) also ran in the invitational field and finished in 166th at 22:54.0.
On the men's side, senior
Ben Garland (Santa Cruz/Harbor HS) continued his strong season by breaking the 25–minute barrier in the 8K invitational, finishing 70th overall in 24:59.1. Freshman
Connor Henderson (South Lake Tahoe HS) placed 122nd among the 193 invitational runners in 25:37.5
"I'm very pleased with today's results," said CSUMB Head Coach
Greg Rhines. "The men and women went to a place they've never been, and it's fast there. Ben and Hannah reset their own records by more than 30 seconds and both teams stepped up today, keeping the new energy around us going. It's getting more powerful."
Junior
Sara Dionne (Norwalk/Gahr HS) led six Otters competing in the women's open division, finishing 42nd with a time of 24:13.1. Junior
Cristina Hernandez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) finished closed behind in a season–best 24:27.3, good for 53rd among the 205 open division runners.
Sophomore
Alix Quenneville (78th, 25:04.2) also finished in the top half of the field while fellow sophomore
Brianna Vandenbosch (110th, 26:10.4) eclipsed her 6K PR by more than a minute.
In the men's open, junior
Karsen Hayden (Huntington Beach/Servite HS) led seven Otter harriers by finishing 73rd in 27:07.3.
Logan Coe (114th, 27:51.5) and
Daniel Metzger (118th, 28:02.3) just missed finishing in the top half of the 224–runner open field.
Next up, it's decision time for Rhines as he now must whittle the Otter traveling squads for a trip to Chico and the 2013 CCAA Championship meet on Oct. 26.
GO OTTERS!
