Otter Men and Women Harriers Place 5th At SFSU

Otters come back strong after 2-week hiatus; Bell, Garland each place 9th

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams came back strong from their 2–week hiatus to each place fifth at the San Francisco State Invitational Friday afternoon at Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadow course. The Otter women placed 5th in a 12–team field while the men did so in a 10–team field.

Sophomore Hannah Bell (Yorba Linda/Esperanza HS) led the way once again for the Otter women, finishing ninth overall at 22:34.4. Junior Jennie Yeaman (Escondido/Mission Hills HS) also gave CSUMB a top 25 finish by placing 24th in 23:24.8.

In all, six of the nine Otter runners competing Friday placed in the top half. Freshman Jessica McIntyre (Los Alamitos HS) led the next wave of Otters in 31st place (23:42.1) with Alix Quennville (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) in 46th (24:38.8). Allie Levy (West Torrance HS) and Cristina Hernandez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) closed out the Otter scoring in 53rd and 55th place respectively.

Cal State Stanislaus won the team scoring with a total of 37. San Francisco State, led by individual low–scorer Zuleima Jimenez, placed second with 67. Humboldt State (71), Cal State East Bay (110) and CSUMB (124) rounded out the top five.

The Otters' fifth place finish put them ahead of NCAA Division I members University of the Pacific (6th, 186) and San Jose State (8th, 213). The Otters also out–paced CCAA rival Sonoma State (7th, 213) and NCAA West Region rivals Academy of Art, Holy Names and Notre Dame de Namur.

On the men's side, Ben Garland (Santa Cruz/Harbor HS) continued his strong senior campaign, leading the way with a ninth–place finish at 25:48.6. Freshman Connor Henderson (South Lake Tahoe HS) earned a top 20 finish of his own, placing 18th by navigating the 8K course in 26:10.0

Freshman Ryan Torres (Ripon HS) and sophomore Daniel Metzger (Reno, Nev./Galena HS) also finished in the top half of the field. Torres placed 41st at 26:56.2 while Metzger came in at 50th in 27:15.11. Logan Coe (Lafayette/Campolindo HS) closed the Otters scoring with a 72nd place finish at 27:57.2.

As a team, the Otters tied for fifth overall with CCAA rival Cal State Stanislaus at 121 points. Humboldt State took the team title with 48 points. SFSU (53), Academy of Art (91) and San Diego Mesa College (95) rounded out the top five.

The Otter cross country teams will close regular season action Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Santa Clara University Bronco Invitational.
