Otter Volleyball Odds & Ends
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW: The 2012 CSUMB volleyball season will blend the old with the new as eight newcomers join eight returning players. Seven of the eight newcomers are freshmen.
SOMETHING BRAND SPANKING NEW: While the Otter roster features seven freshmen, the newest addition to the CSUMB volleyball family won't be a freshman for another 18 years. Head Coach
Jody Garry and Assistant Athletic Director
Kirby Garry welcomed daughter Grace to the world on Aug. 27. And, remarkably yes, Jody was on the sidelines coaching the Otters to victory against Dominican (NY) College four days later.
NONCONFERENCE STREAK EXTENDS, ENDS: The Otters won their season opener for the third consecutive season, defeating Dominican (NY) 25–16, 25–15, 25–10 on Aug. 31, extending their nonconference winning streak to 10 matches dating back to 2009. No. 23 Minnesota State–Mankato ended that run by taking down the Otters in four later that evening.
ASHEN KILLS A RECORD: Sophomore outside hitter
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) didn't take long in killing the first school record of the 2012 season. Ashen put down 25 kills in the four set win over Alaska–Anchorage on Sept. 1, breaking the seven–year–old mark of 24 set by
Brittany Etchings against Cal State East Bay on Sept. 21, 2005.
