Kirby Garry

Entering his 12th year as Athletic Director and 18th overall at Cal State Monterey Bay, Kirby Garry has played a role in shaping nearly every aspect of Otter Athletics as an NCAA DII intercollegiate athletics program. In the process, he has emerged as nationally respected leader in athletics administration, becoming an influential voice on topics of leadership, student-athlete well being, development, marketing and social media. Garry was recognized by his peers in 2024, when he was honored as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division II Athletic Director of the Year.

Garry provides leadership and support for the Otters’ 14 sports as well as the department’s more than 40 full and part-time coaching, administrative and support staff members.

A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Garry was a football team captain and All-North Central Conference wide receiver at the University of North Dakota. During his student-athlete career, UND won three NCC Championships (1993, 1994, 1995) and twice reached the Division II semi-finals ('93, '94).

Garry graduated cum laude from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in social science and received his master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in athletic administration.

Garry and his spouse Jody have four children: Noah, Ben, Addy and Grace.
