Garry Receives NACDA A.D. of the Year Award

Kirby Garry honored at annual NACDA convention in Las Vegas

June 25, 2024

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Cal State Monterey Bay Director of Athletics Kirby Garry (@kirbygarry) officially received his 2024 Athletic Director of the Year Award at the annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention June 11 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Garry was one of 28 winners across seven collegiate divisions that include both four-year universities and two-year colleges. The awards will be presented June 11 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas as part of the NACDA annual convention.

The timing of the award couldn't have been more perfect. The Otters recorded a school record 212.25 points in the Learfield Director's Cup standings in 2023–24, matching their best finish ever in their 13 seasons of eligibility for the award.

"This is a team award and a reflection of the tremendous support we've had across campus for years," says Garry. "My hope is that this honor shines a spotlight on our deserving student-athletes, coaches and staff. To be mentioned among my friends and mentors who have won this award before is truly humbling. This all really hit me as we were standing on the stage being recognized. I look up to so many people in the NACDA and D2ADA family. It was a special day that I will not forget. I'm thankful."

CSUMB President Vanya Quiñones said Garry's award was an acknowledgment of his dedication.

"During his time at Cal State Monterey Bay, Kirby has built up our athletics programs, supported our coaches and created an atmosphere where our student-athletes excel, with some of the highest graduation rates of any cohort on campus," Quiñones said. "His leadership has created an atmosphere that propels all our teams to excel, and we look forward to many more achievements with Kirby at the helm of our athletics department.

"This recognition from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics is well deserved," she added, "and emphasizes how lucky we are to have Kirby leading our teams."

Garry has been actively involved with the NACDA throughout his career in collegiate athletics. As part of the officer rotation, he served as president of the Division II Athletic Directors Association this past year.
