Otters Trade Comebacks With Toros But Fall In 5

CARSON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills traded comebacks Friday night in the Torodome, but it was the hosts who got the last word in by taking a 25–17, 21–25, 21–25, 25–19, 15–5 decision.

CSUMB (6–5, 0–3 CCAA) shook off a tentative first set by hitting .316 and .293 while taking sets two and three to go up 2–1. But CSUDH (4–6, 2–1) ended the fourth set with a 6–1 run to tie the match before racing to a 5–2 lead it wouldn't relinquish in the fifth.

“Tonight's was an extremely disappointing loss, however, we showed some real growth in our adjustments in games two and three,” said CSUMB Head coach Jody Garry. “We never brought our best in game five, which is a tough lesson for a young team. But it's a long season and I look forward to how much they will grow by the second half.”

The Otters got top flight performances from several of their youngsters, led once again by sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen, who led all attackers with 20 kills and added career–high 14 digs for her first collegiate double–double. Freshman middle blocker Janai Johnson made her second consecutive start and responded with career highs of 10 kills and six blocks.

Also making her presence felt was freshman libero Rachel Cookus, who reached double figures for the sixth time in 11 collegiate matches with a season–high 22 digs. Rounding out the notable statistical performance for the Otters was sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston, who dished a career–high 41 assists.

CSUMB will look to bounce back into the win column Saturday night when it travels up I–710 to tackle Cal State L.A. in The Eagles' Nest. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
