Julia Ashen took center stage once again, leading all attackers with 12 kills Friday night at Sonoma State.
BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Sometimes, Goliath wins.
In a battle between 2011 NCAA Regional finalist Sonoma State and a scrappy Cal State Monterey Bay team with seven freshmen on its roster, it wasn't hard to pick which squad played the role of David in Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association opener in Seawolf Gym. Unfortunately for Otter fans, this one didn't play to the Biblical script as Sonoma State rolled to a 25–17, 25–16, 25–18 win.
Outside hitter
Julia Ashen continued the strong start to her sophomore campaign, leading all attackers with 12 kills for CSUMB (6–3, 0–1 CCAA). Allyson Sather and Caylie Seitz led Sonoma (7–2, 1–0) with 11 and 10 kills respectively.
The Seawolves raced to a 17–9 lead to put the second set away early, but CSUMB played competitively in the first and third sets. The teams were tied 13–13 in the first before a 7–2 run allowed Sonoma to ease away. The Otters trailed just 13–12 in the third before a similar Seawolf effort sealed the match.
In addition to Ashen's night, the Otters got a match–high 10 digs from freshman outside hitter
Jessica Malcolm and four kills in six swings from in the welcome return of senior middle blocker
Lily Staight from an early season injury.
CSUMB continues its Northern California roadtrip Saturday night with a match at San Francisco State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
