Representatives from six teams helped out at the 22nd Annual Sea Otter Classic, a "Celebration of Cycling"

SEASIDE, Calif. – Six Cal State Monterey Bay athletic teams volunteered their time this past weekend at the 22nd Annual Sea Otter Classic, a four-day “Celebration of Cycling” that welcomes nearly 10,000 athletes and 50,000 race fans and other bicycle enthusiasts.

Professional and amateur athletes make the annual trip to participate in one of cycling's best competitive events in various mountain and road bike disciplines.

The student-athletes that were representing CSUMB were members of men's and women's cross country, men's basketball, men's golf, men's soccer, and sailing teams.

Cross country head coach Greg Rhines and the team helped with the downhill event where they placed and timed category two's and three's in both genders and of all age groups.

"It was a hoot helping with the downhill,” says coach Rhines. “There were many characters coming through all sporting high intensity and adrenaline as they rushed by. We were proud to represent the CSUMB Otters.”

"We were stationed at two rest stops as part of the 'Grand Fondo Event',” says men's basketball head coach Rob Bishop.  "At the rest stops we were in charge of refilling water bottles and providing snacks for all of the riders. It was great to get out and enjoy the day with over 600 bike riders taking part in the event."
