David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and a double as the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team defeated Cal State East Bay, 12-4 to earn a series split with the Pioneers Monday in Hayward.
The Otters broke out the bats in the sixth and eight innings, scoring five runs in both top of the frames. The sixth featured five hits highlighted with 2-RBI doubles by senior
Chris Lopiccolo (Marina, Calif./UCSB) and junior
Nolan Murray (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS).

Jesse Olson (Citrus Heights, Calif./Sierra College) and senior
Danny Nelson (Morgan Hills, Calif./San Jose CC) each singled in the eighth and junior
Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) loaded the bases after being struck by a pitch. This set the stage for Garcia's grand slam, the first since Lopiccolo's hit one against Cal Poly Pomona on Apr. 29, 2011.
An RBI single by Garcia put CSUMB in the lead 1-0 after the first inning.
The Pioneers evened the score in the fourth on Zozaya's RBI single down the left line.
East Bay posted single run in the sixth before both teams notched one in the seventh to make it 7-3 CSUMB.
In only his second start of 2012, junior
Jordan Helmkamp (Aliso Viegjo, Calif./Saddleback College) gave up one earned run over 5 2/3 innings to improve to 2-1. CSUEB's Brandyn Bell picked up the loss after surrendering five earned runs, six total in his six innings.
The Otters (17-17, 10-14 CCAA) host Cal State L.A. in a four-game series April 5-7.
