SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team concluded its non-conference schedule Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over Fresno Pacific at the Otter Sports Complex.
“We received great pitching performances today, along with a couple timely, clutch hits and that was the difference in the ballgame,” said CSUMB Head Caoch
Walt White. “We were able to play a lot of guys today and we came away with another great team win.”
Junior right-hander
Jonas Noack (San Diego, Calif./UOP) (1-0) went a pre-determined 4.0 innings, giving up three hits and a run, while striking out six. Junior
Jacob Crose (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS), followed by junior
Dylan Auker (San Jose, Calif./VCU) did not allow a run in the final five innings. Auker retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save.
Freshman
Chris Blanton (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame HS) went 3-for-4 with a double and classmate
Garrett Gemgnani (Los Angeles, Calif./Culver City HS) record two hits as the Otter outhit FPU 11-7.
“Noack was outstanding today,” White said. “He continues to get better and I can see him pitching some significant innings as our season progresses. Gemgnani was solid behind the plate and delivered a big two-out double that gave us an early lead.”
The Otters found themselves down 1-0 in the first after FPU scored on Michael Vaughn's double.
CSUMB took the lead in the third on Gemgnani's 2 RBI double down the right field line, scoring junior
Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) and junior
Gino Valletta (San Jose, Calif./San Jose CC) who reached on singles.
Pinch hitter
Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) doubled in the sixth to bring Blanton across the plate for an insurance run.
FPU's Josh Medeles took the loss despite an eight-strikeout performance in his four innings.
“I feel our ball club is getting better,” White said. “We know that we need to do to continue to progress as a team, because the upcoming CCAA schedule is quite a challenge.
The Otters (9-5, 2-2 CCAA) return to conference action at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, kicking off a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino.
