Otters drop 6-2 decision to Cal Poly Pomona in series finale

BOX SCORE POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team fell 6-2 to No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona in the series finale on Sunday at Scolinos Field.

With Saturday's doubleheader sweep, the Otters split the CCAA series opener with the Broncos.

Freshman Jeff Owen (Clovis, Calif./Clovis East) went the first five innings, giving up three runs on three hits and four walks, suffering his first loss of the season. He struck out four batters.

Junior David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) went 3-for-4, scoring both runs for the Otters.
CPP's Geoff Broussard got the win after throwing a complete game, scattering five hits.

After recording 20 hits on Saturday, the CSUMB offense came to a halt in the first four innings as the Broncos held the Otters hitless. The Broncos took a 3-0 lead on a first inning RBI single by Jordan Whitman and Jenzen Torres' two-run homer in the third.

Garcia got the Otters on the board with an infield single to open the fifth and scored on a groundout by Jason Merjano (San Ramon, Calif./Sierra College).

After the Broncos extended their lead with a run in the sixth, Garcia collected his sixth double to lead off the seventh and crossed the plate on Tommy George's (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove) single.

CPP added two more runs in the seventh to finalize the score at 6-2.

On Tuesday, CSUMB (8-5, 2-2 CCAA) concludes a three-game series with Fresno Pacific after spliting a doubleheader, 3-6 and 5-2, in Fresno on Feb. 7.
