Shonetta Crain-Williams led the Otters with 11 points Saturday night versus San Bernardino.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior nights can be funny things in college sports. Sometimes, senior nights fire up the home to to play a near perfect game.
Saturday night was not one of those nights.
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team opened its senior night game against Cal State San Bernardino by shooting an almost unbelievable 3–for–25 from the field. Somehow, the Otters rebounded enough to take a lead, but they couldn't hold on as San Bernardino came back late to pull off a 44–42 shocker in The Kelp Bed.
Perhaps it was the knowledge that they'll have one more home game—CSUMB will host a first round game in the CCAA Tournament on Feb. 28—or perhaps it was San Bernardino trying to scratch out one of the final tournament spots for itself that turned the tide in this game.
Whatever the cause, the effect was that the Otters scored just six points in the first 15 minutes of the game. But the stalwart Otter defense kept things close enough that they were able to climb to within 18–16 by halftime.
CSUMB didn't take its first lead until a pair of
Brandi Stephens (Sacramento/El Camino HS) free throws made it 38–37 with 5:07 remaining. Another Stephens Free throw and a
Shonetta Crain-Williams (Oakland/El Cerrito HS) layup got the lead to 42–37 with three minutes left, but that was it for CSUMB.
CSUMB missed two shots and turned the ball over three times in the final 2:01 as the Coyotes scored the final seven points to secure the win.
Crain-Williams led CSUMB (17–7, 14–6 CCAA) with 11 points while
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) grabbed a team–high seven boards. Jaslyn Cosey scored 14 as the only player in double figures for San Bernardino (9–15, 8–12).
CSUMB closes the regular season on the road, playing at Chico State Feb. 23 and Cal State Stanislaus Feb. 24.
