LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team won its third straight game via the eight run rule, defeating Notre Dame de Namur 9-1, before being upset 5-3 by Central Washington to conclude play at the MSUB Desert Stinger Classic Sunday at Majestic Park.
CSUMB (8-2 overall) matched the 2010 Otters for the best start in program history. The loss to CWU snapped a seven-game CSUMB win streak, the second longest streak in program history.
CSUMB's three consecutive run rule wins (the Otters defeated Simon Fraser 15-0 and Western Oregon 12-2 in their previous two games) were also a program first. The Otters posted consecutive run rule wins three times previously, most recently two years ago to the day via a pair of 12-3 wins over Cal State Stanislaus on Feb. 12, 2010.
As has been the case often this season, the Otters started with a bang Sunday, scoring four times in the top of the first against NDNU. Sophomore third baseman
Danielle Onken's (Oakdale HS) two-run double capped the rally.
The offense put the game away in the fifth inning when
Nicole Villanueva's (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) fourth homer of the season preceded Onken's first blast of 2012 to highlight a five-run outburst.
All of that support was more than enough for freshman
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly HS), who threw four shutout innings to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Things followed a different script against Central Washington as the Wildcats jumped out to a 5–1 lead after two innings. The Otters ended up out-hitting CWU 7-6 for the game, but for the first time in 2012 did not post and extra base hit. CSUMB scored twice in the fourth to cut the deficit in half. The Otters had a chance to pull closer in the fifth but
Sklyer Valdivia (Beaumont HS) was gunned down at the plate trying to score on a Reinhardt single to end the last threat.
Jamie Moon (Torrance HS) led the Otters with four hits Sunday. Onken, Reinhardt and
Jackie Serna (Corona HS) each added three.
CSUMB begins the CCAA portion of its schedule Friday, Feb. 17 when it heads to wine country to face Sonoma State in a four-game series. The Otters will host Cal State San Bernardino in their home openers Feb. 25-25 at the Otter Sports Complex.
