Not only did freshman Nicole Pires hit her second home run of the season Saturday night, she has now handled 37 chances without and error to begin her collegiate career.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The power surge continued for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team as the Otters pounded out three more home runs in a five–inning, 12–2 win over Western Oregon to close day two of the MSUB Desert Stinger Classic at Majestic Park.
CSUMB (7–1 overall) is off to the second best start in program history. The 2010 teams opened 8–1. The Otters could make it their best start every with a pair of wins Sunday.Their current six–game winning streak equals the fourth best streak ever. They posted eight–game wins streaks during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Again, they can match the best streak ever with a pair of wins Sunday.
Saturday night, freshman first baseman
Nina Villanueva (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) hit her third home run five games. Freshman catcher
Nicole Pires (Ontario/Colony HS) and senior shortstop
Jackie Serna (Corona HS) each hit their second home runs of season to help fuel the 12–run outburst. Villanueva and Pires both drove in four runs on the day.
The Otters made sophomore pitcher
Kylie Linnane's (Salinas/Notre Dame HS) second victory of the season a formality by scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Villanueva and Pires hit two–run shots to cap the outburst. Serna's leadoff home run and Pires' two–run double highlighted a three–run third inning.
That was more than enough support for Linnane (2–0) who allowed three hits and fanned four to earn the win.
CSUMB will finish play at the MSUB Desert Stinger Classic with games against Notre Dame de Namur (11:30 a.m.) and Central Washington (2 p.m.) at Majestic Park.
