Jessica Malcolm posted seven of her 11 kills in the first set to help the Otters race to an early lead Saturday night.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team continued its mastery of The Kelp Bed, completing a weekend sweep by dispatching Cal State Dominguez Hills 25-17, 17-25, 25-16, 25-13 Saturday night.
CSUMB (12-11, 6-9 CCAA) improved to 9-4 in The Kelp Bed, matching the program record for home wins set in both 2007 and 2010. The Otters also moved their record above .500 this late in the season for just the second time ever. The 2010 Otters were 15-8 after 23 matches.
Sophomore outside hitter
Julia Ashen led a strong all-around team effort, notching her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills while matching her career high with 17 digs. Both totals led all players Saturday. Freshman middle blocker
Janai Johnson hit .357 with a season-high 13 kills and sophomore setter
Kelsey Johnston chipped in a 40-assist, 11-dig double-double of her own.
Even with the solid play of that trio, it was freshman outside hitter
Jessica Malcolm who carried the Otters early. Malcolm recorded seven of her 11 kills in the first set, including a heater on set point to get the Otters rolling early with a 25-17 win.
Dominguez Hills used a quick 6-1 spurt midway through set two to pull away for its own 25-17 win and even the match at one set apiece. But CSUMB turned the tables in set three using a pair of Johnson kills as a springboard to a 9-2 run that broke open a 10-10 tie, allowing the Otters to take the third set and control of the match.
CSUMB didn't wait nearly as long to blow open the decisive fourth set, using a 10-0 run to open a commanding 14-4 lead that wouldn't be challenged.
Whitney Lee led CSUDH (9-13, 7-8 CCAA) with 11 kills. Korryne Kelley led the Toro backrow with 14 digs.
CSUMB will leave the comfort of The Kelp Bed to begin a four-match roadtrip next Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona. The Otters return home to close out the regular season with matches against Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego No. 15-16.
GO OTTERS!
