Troy Watkins has his best all-around game of the season, coming off the bench to score seven points and grab six rebounds.
BOX SCORE
POMONA, Calif. — After yielding 90 points in each of its last two games, the Cal State Monterey men's basketball defense returned to form Saturday night against No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona. Unfortunately for the Otters, the offense took the night off.
The CSUMB defense held Pomona to 66 points and 38 percent shooting from the floor, but the offense turned the ball over a season-high 25 times and shot season lows of 31 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the line as the Broncos rolled to a 66-39 win in Kellogg Gym.
As has happened in recent games, a slow start killed the Otters. The Otters went 0-for-7 from the floor with six turnovers in the first 9:47 as Cal Poly raced to a 12-2 lead.
CSUMB managed just 15 first half points and the Broncos went into the lockerroom up 28-15. Big second
half comeback have kept the Otters close throughout the season, and when they scored four unanswered points to open the second half, it looked like they would follow that script to an exciting finish again. But they turned the ball over on four of their next six possessions as Cal Poly built its lead to 42-19 and put the game on ice.
Junior forward
Derrick Anderson (Pittsburg HS) led CSUMB with 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard
Troy Watkins (Riverside/Woodcrest HS) had his best all-around game of the season with seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
Mitchel Anderson led a balanced Cal Poly effort with 15 points and nine rebounds.
CSUMB (2-9, 1-6 CCAA) will look to snap its six-game losing streak when it continues its five-game road trip at Cal State San Bernardino next Friday.
Cal Poly Pomona improved to 9-1 and 6-1 with the win.
