CSULA puts on best shooting performance by an Otter foe in 72 games

BOX SCORE

LOS ANGELES — For a long spell Saturday night, it looked as if both Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State L.A. were on course to set CSUMB team records for their diametrically opposed shooting performances. Neither etched their efforts into the record books, but Cal State L.A. put on the best shooting show by an Otter foe in 72 games on its way to a 79–64 win in the Eagles' Nest.

CSUMB (13–4, 10–3 CCAA) began the night making just four of its first 21 attempts from the field. Cal State L.A. (13–5, 11–3), meanwhile, shot 61 percent in the first half and 57 percent for the game. It was the best shooting night by an Otter opponent since Chico State converted on 59 percent from the floor on Dec. 5, 2009.

Thanks to the hot and cold starts, CSUMB was never in this one. CSULA got its lead to double digits at 17–9 barely eight minutes in. A Samantha Hansen jumper made it 22–11 at the 8:54 mark of the first half and the lead never dropped to single digits again.

Four Otters scored in double figures, led by Brandi Stephens with 12 points. It marked the third consecutive game with Stephens as high scorer. CSUMB also got double–digit efforts from Erika Ward and Shonetta Crain-Williams (11 each) and Jennifer Bandy with 10.

Lacy Ramon led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 20 points.

CSUMB will look to bounce back into the win column when it continues its four–game roadtrip Thursday night at Sonoma State. The Otters return to The Kelp Bed to host Cal Poly Pomona Friday, Feb. 10.
