Seniors
Rheann Fall and
Monique Sena both racked up their fourth double-double of the season. Fall notched 11 kills and 12 digs. Sena dished out 31 assists on top of her 16 digs. Senior middle hitter
Melanie Lashbrook also recorded 11 kills.
“We had three keys going into the match; game-time focus, the little things and composure,” said Head Coach
Jody Garry. “I thought we did all of those in the first set. In the final three sets, we lost some of our intensity at times and that is due to playing a good team.”
CSUMB won the first set, 25-22, after recording 16 kills to the Seawolves' 11 kills. Lashbrook led all hitters with a .444 attack percentage with five kills on nine attempts and just one error. Freeno also recorded five kills and Fall chipped in four. Sonoma State's Kelsey Hull registered five kills.
The Seawolves offense came alive in the second set, tying the match with a 25-19 win. SSU notched 14 kills while keeping CSUMB to single digits with nine kills. Lashbrook led the Otters in the set with three kills, while Fall and Freeno posted two each. Allyson Sather paced the Seawolves with six kills.
The teams stayed even at the beginning of the third set, but an 8-2 run put the Seawolves up 13-7. The Otters rallied with three straight points capped by a Lashbrook kill, but Sonoma State proved to be too much for CSUMB as they fell 25-13. Sonoma State's Keala Peterson led the Seawolves with four kills.
Sonoma State closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Freeno led the Otters in the set with three kills and two aces. The Seawolves hit a match-high .406 with 15 kills.
“It was a great test for us and we had a good chance to beat them,” Garry said. “They had to bring their best to beat us. I look forward to the opportunity to play them again as we continue to get better and learn from this experience.”
CSUMB concludes the weekend against visiting Humboldt State on Saturday, Sept. 17. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Kelp Bed.
