Post-game interview with Head Coach Rob Cummings
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team learned some valuable lessons from Friday's season–opening tie with San Francisco State and applied what they learned Sunday to earn a well–deserved 2–0 win over Cal State East Bay at the Otter Sports Complex.
The win was the first of the
Rob Cummings era of CSUMB men's soccer. The Otters improved to 1–0–1 overall and in CCAA play with the win while East Bay dropped to 1–3 and 0–2 in conference action.
“I was very pleased with our effort today and how we applied the lessons we learned from the San Francisco State game” said Cummings. “East Bay is a solid team and if we had finished this game the way we did Friday, things might have been different. But we continue to grow with every game and getting that first win is an important step in the process.”
Junior midfielder
Max Brixey (Truckee HS) put the Otters in control early, taking a short cross from
Julian Salas (Long Beach/Lakewood HS) and leaving no doubt with a solid finish for his first goal of the season. Freshman forward
Connor Ray (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) added an insurance marker in the 64th minute when he completed a nice build up by converting
Aaron Kochman's (Boise, Id./Centennial HS) cross into his first collegiate goal.
That support proved more than adequate thanks to a composed effort from the Otter defense. Senior goalkeeper
Sam Campanelli (Palmdale/Highland HS) spent most of his afternoon conducting a backline that protected him from much serious danger until the game's waning moments. Campanelli needed to make just two saves to earn his second career shutout.
The Otters also got significant contributions from their reserves, several of whom made their 2011 debuts Sunday. Kochman, freshman
Michael Brixey (Truckee HS) and junior forward
Neo Modise (San Lorenzo/Bishop O'Dowd HS) each made their first appearance and acquitted themselves well in significant playing time.
“I was very happy with our depth and the energy we got from our bench today,” said Cummings. “We're in the middle of playing three games in five days and depth is going to be very important.”
The Otters hit the road for the next three matches, starting with a trip to Riverside to take on a strong Cal Baptist side Tuesday (Sept. 13). CSUMB returns home to host Chico State Friday (Sept. 23) at the Otter Sports Complex.
