Rob Cummings

Rob Cummings

After taking over the Cal State Monterey Bay men’s soccer program in March of 2011, Rob Cummings began laying a foundation that promises future success for the Otters. Cummings led CSUMB to a school-record seven CCAA wins in his inaugural campaign and later broke that record with nine conference wins in 2013. Through four seasons Cummings has seen nine players earn All–CCAA honors.

In addition to their on–field successes, Cummings’ teams have been very productive both in the community and in the classroom. The Otters are actively involved in a variety of community service activities, including strong support for the Marina Youth Soccer Association.

On the academic front, led by seniors Max Brixey and Dylan Niven earning West Region Scholar All-America honors, the Otters were the only CCAA men’s team to earn the Team Academic Award from the National Collegiate Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 2012.

Before becoming an Otter, Cummings served as the associate head coach at Midwestern State (Texas) for four seasons.  During his tenure at MSU, he helped the Mustangs to two NCAA Division II Final Four appearances and four Lone Star Conference crowns.

Cummings began his stint at Midwestern State in 2007 and assisted Head Coach Doug Elder in guiding the Mustangs to a 69–9–7 record in those four years. In his final season at Midwestern the Mustangs rolled to a 19-1-2 record with its only loss of the season coming by the hands of Rollins (FL) in the NCAA semifinals. MSU finished the season as No. 3 in the final NCAA Division II national ranking.

Prior to his stint at Midwestern, Cummings led Bethel (Tenn.) to back–to–back NAIA national tournament appearances as the Wildcats posted a 26–12–4 (.667) record during his two seasons as head coach, earning him Regional Coach of the Year recognition in 2006. Cummings, who also served as Bethel’s associate athletics director in 2006, directed the wildcats to their best–ever regular season in 2006 at 15–4–2 as the Wildcats topped out at No. 16 in the NSCAA/adidas NAIA National Poll before losing in the regional semifinals. During his tenure, the men's program produced three Academic All-Conference players as well as five honorable mention All-American selections.

In 2005, the Wildcats upset NCAA Division II No. 10 St. Leo (Fla.) 2-1 which marked the highest-ranked opponent any Bethel school had beaten regardless of classification.

Prior to Bethel, he served as the men’s and women’s coach at NCAA Division II St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana where he led the Puma men to their first–ever national ranking. The women qualified for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament in each of his two seasons and hosted a first round match for the first time in five seasons in 2004.
