Final Results
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With a late charge in the final nine holes, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team claimed a two-stroke victory over second place Sonoma State to win the 2011 NCAA Central/West Super Regional at University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course on Wednesday afternoon.
“What an awesome day for the Otter Athletic Department, the University and the Monterey Bay Community,” said head coach
Jason Owen. “Five wins in a row is pretty impressive at any level but to do it at this level is amazing.”
The Otters recorded a three-round total of 9-under par 855 to bring home CSUMB's first Regional Championship Title.
CSUMB entered the final round six strokes behind Sonoma State. The Otters shot a 7-under par 281 as a team Wednesday to beat the Seawolves, who turned in a 1-over par 289.
“I am extremely pleased with the team's performance,” Owen said. “We did exactly what we set out to do.”
The Otters have qualified to compete in the 49th Annual NCAA Men's Golf National Championships held on May 17-20 at Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals in Florence. Ala.
Fort Lewis College finished third with a 865, followed by Colorado State-Pueblo (866) and Hawaii-Hilo (876) for the remaining three spots to advance to nationals.
Senior
John Jackson fired an8-under par 208 to become CSUMB's first male Regional Individual Medalist. In the final round, Jackson had a flawless performance with five birdies and 13 pars. He finished with 16 birdies in the 54-hole tournament.
Sophomore
Dylan Jackson tied for third with a three-round total 3-under par 213. After leading the first day, Jackson slipped a bit in the second round before rebounding with a 1-under par 213.
Starting the final round tied for 29th, senior
Scott Yeakel carded a 1-under par 71 to finish tied for 17th with a 1-over par 217 total.
Senior
Oskar Nystrom shot an even-par 72 on the final day for a 5-over par 221 three-day total.
Junior
D.J. Milligan finished the tournament with a 14-over par 230 and in a five-way tie for 68th.
