Otters Take Series Opener Over Cal State East Bay

SEASIDE, Calif.
- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team opened the four-game series against Cal State East Bay on a good note, pulling out a 7-4 win over the Pioneers.

The Otters (15-18, 12-12 CCAA) set a program record their 12th conference win this season. 

With all nine starters connecting for a hit or more, senior #Greg Fujii# led the Otters with three hits. Sophomore #Tyler Young# racked up two doubles. Sophomore #Nolan Murray# and junior #Danny Nelson# eached added two hits for CSUMB.

Senior #Scott Tully# picked up his third win of the season and #Jake Paolinetti# came in for the save.


Junior #Randall Packard#'s RBI single knotted the game in the second inning after the Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead. 

A two-run homer by CSUEB's McManus put the Pioneers back on top 3-1 in the top of the third.

The Otters answered with three runs in the bottom of the side.  Fujii led off with a single to right center and advanced on sophomore #Ronnie Fhurong#'s sacrifice bunt.  Nelson singled to second to put runners at the corners.  After Fujii scored on junior Chris Lopiccolo's grounder, Young doubled to the gap to plate Nelson and then scored on sophomore Tommy George's single.

CSUMB added another run in the fourth on Fujii's fielder's choice, scoring Packard who was rewarded first after being hit by a pitch.

In the fifth, Lopiccolo led off with a double down the right line and advanced to third on a passed ball.  Young's second double of the day scored Lopiccolo.  Murray's double to the left corner raised CSUMB's lead to 7-3.

The Pioneers posted one more run in the seventh when Shields doubled and then advanced 90 feet twice on two grounders.

CSUMB continues its series against Cal State East Bay on Saturday, April 16, traveling to Hayward for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
