ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team rallied in the top of the ninth only to see it slip away, falling to Sonoma State 10-9 on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.
Junior #Danny Nelson# went 3-for-5 with a RBI and three runs scored. Senior #Greg Fujii# and Junior #Randall Packard# chipped in with two hits apiece. Starter #Scott Tully# got a threw five innings, giving up two runs, two hits and four walks while striking out four batters. Pitcher #David Holland# (0-1) got the loss in relief.
In a game that had four lead changes in the final four innings, the Otters outhit Sonoma State 12-6 with the Seawolves committing four errors.
Scoring a run in the third, fifth and sixth innings, the Otters took a 3-2 lead that would not last long. The bottom of the sixth inning proved to be a big one for the Seawolves as they racked up four runs to take a 6-3 advantage.
After both teams posted a run in the seventh, the Otters closed the gap to 7-6 with two runs in the eighth.
CSUMB posted a rally in the top of the ninth with Fujii leading the way by starting off with a single to shortstop. Fujii advanced to second on a pass ball and moved to third after sophomore #Ronnie Fhurong# grounded out to second base. Sophomore #Alex Mangubat# hit a single to the left field to bring Fujii home. Nelson doubled down the left line to score Mangubat. Nelson touched home on Packard's single to right field giving the Otters a 9-7 lead.
The Seawolves crushed CSUMB's comeback with three runs on two hits, two walks and a wild pitch.
Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5 when the two squads face off in a doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
