SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team took a step forward Tuesday night, starting and finishing fast in an 82–74 win over visiting Cal–Maritime in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (1–2 overall) built double–digit leads in both halves, but in between those Cal–Maritime (5–3) battled and actually took one–point leads twice midway through the second half before the Otters were able to put the game away.

“We're learning how to win,” said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Bishop. “We hit some big shots, we got some stops defensively and we made free throws down the stretch.”

Juniors Derrick Anderson (Pittsburg HS) and J.J. Campbell (Riverside/King HS) led the Otters with 17 and 15 points respectively. The duo also combined to make 6-of-6 from the line in the waning moments to hold off the final Keelhauler comeback attempt.

CSUMB used a 16–0 run — its largest run of the young season — to turn an early 8–5 deficit into a 21–8 lead midway through the first half. But Cal–Maritime chipped away at that lead and climbed back to within 35–30 on an Isaiah Moore layup at the buzzer.

Another Moore layup gave the Keelhaulers a 50–49 lead nine minutes into the second half before Hamilton Chang's short jumper gave Cal–Maritime its final lead at 57–56 with slightly more than eight minutes to play.

With the Otters clinging to a one–point lead at 61–60 at the six–minute mark, Campbell and Anderson each sank a pair of free throws on the ensuing two Otter possessions and Cal–Maritime never got within a possession of the lead again.

“I told the team to enjoy this,” said Bishop. “We're going to have a great Thanksgiving now, but we have to learn from this. We learned how to close out a team and now we'll have better teams coming in.”

In addition to Anderson and Campbell, junior guard Brandon Ward (Riverside/Woodcrest HS) added 12 points for the Otters while freshman guard Jalen Headspeth (Oakland HS) passed for a game–high five assists.

Moore led all players with a 21–point, 10–rebound double–double for Cal–Maritime.

CSUMB returns to action Dec. 2 when it hosts preseason favorite Humboldt State in its CCAA opener. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
