SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team won its first CCAA title last season behind a suffocating defense that led the nation in points per game allowed. In their 2011–12 season opener, the Otters added the long ball to their repertoire, tying a school record with 11 three–pointers in an 82–58 win over Academy of Art Tuesday night at The Kelp Bed.
The Otters equalled the record of 11 threes set previously against Cal State East Bay and Montana State Billings. That offensive support was mostly superfluous for a defense that held the Urban Knights to just 15 points while building a 47–15 lead at the break.
“I'm really happy with how we shot the ball in the first half,” said Head Coach Renee Jimenez of her team's record–tying performance. “We're a shoot to get hot and shoot to stay hot team. Shooting threes is something we've always done well. We have great shooters and we spend a lot of time working on our shots.”
CSUMB got 16 points from senior Erica Ward (Simi Valley/Royal HS) and 15 from junior forward
Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS). Ward and Holcomb each knocked down four three–pointers, just one off the CSUMB record of five set twice by Dana Andrews during the 2008–09 campaign.
Ward hit her trey barely one minute into Tuesday's contest to give the Otters a 3–0 lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Urban Knights closed to within 11–9 on an Ariel Dale three four minutes into the game, but that served as a catalyst for 9–0 and 23–2 runs as the Otters put the game out of reach over the ensuing 10 minutes.
“I saw a great 20 minutes. I enjoyed the way we played but we have to learn to play two halves,” said Jimenez. “Overall I'm pleased with our first half performance and I like us about nine players deep.”
In addition to Ward and Holcomb, juniors
Stefanie Corgel (Manhattan Beach/UCSB) and
Brittani Jefferson (Palmdale/Antelope Valley College) each scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in their debutante Otter performances. Junior guard
Jessica Fontenette (Chino Hills/Bishop Amat) added career highs of 13 points and six assists.
Alisa Griggs led Academy of Art (1–2 overall) with 14 points. Devin London scored 12 and Lorraine Etchell pulled down a game–high seven rebounds for the Urban Knights.
CSUMB will take a week off before returning to action Wednesday, Nov. 23 against Colorado State–Pueblo. Tip–off in The Kelp Bed is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
