HAYWARD, Calif. — Less than a year removed from last season's one–win campaign, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team continued its improbable turnaround with a 3–1 victory over Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The win lifts CSUMB's record to 5–4–1 in CCAA play (5–5–1 overall) and to within three points of first place in the CCAA North Division. Oh, and by the way, North Division co–leader Sonoma State visits the Otter Sports Complex Friday in a match with huge postseason implications throughout the CCAA.

But first to Sunday, when a total team effort paced the Otters to their second consecutive road victory. Twelve different players combined to help the Otters out–shoot East Bay 15–8 for the game. Despite the huge shot advantage, CSUMB had to climb out of an early hole after East Bay grabbed the lead on a Javier Martin strike in the 14th minute.

The Otters took control from that point, however, taking six unanswered shots that culminated with Beau Villanueva's (Turlock/Pitman HS) penalty kick equalizer in the 33rd minute.

It took the Otters less than two minutes of second half play to earn the lead when Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Hancock JC) netted his team–leading fourth goal of the season with helpers by Villanueva and Max Brixey (Truckee HS). CSUMB took the game by the scruff of the neck late when junior Dylan Niven (Studio City/Camino Real HS) notched his first collegiate goal in the 86th minute.

CSUMB's three–goal outburst, its largest of the season, provided more than ample support for junior goalkeeper Cory Calder (South Lake Tahoe/Cabrillo JC) to earn his second victory in relief of injured starter Sam Campanelli (Palmdale/Highland HS).

Over the next two weeks, the Otters will square off with all three teams ahead of them on the tightly packed CCAA North Division table. In addition to Sonoma State, the Otters will travel to play at co–leader Cal State Stanislaus (Oct. 21) and at third place Chico State (Oct. 23).
