LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's and women's cross country teams got their first looks at some of the top competition from the southern half of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Saturday morning, competing at the UC San Diego Triton Classic. The women's team acquitted itself well, finishing eighth in the 13–team field and fourth among NCAA Division II competition. The Otter men finished fifth and third among CCAA schools.

Junior Piper Delaney (Medford, Ore./Boise State) led the way for the Otter women once again, navigating the 6K course in 22:57.6 to finish eighth overall. The Otters also got a top 30 finish from freshman Cristina Hernandez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS), who finished 29th at 24:08.1.

"It is reassuring to see the teams growing in a positive direction week by week, meet by meet," says Head Coach Greg Rhines. "This course was slower than last weeks, and yet some of the women's team either had a personal record or got very close."

CSUMB's other scorers were senior Hayley Tharp (43rd, 24:28.0) and freshmen Jennie Yeaman (50th, 24:41.2) and Sara Dionne (25:04.2).

On the men's side, junior Cameron Cruse (Seaside/Monterey Peninsula College) earned CSUMB's top finish, placing 20th on the 10K course in 34:40.2. Freshman Karson Hayden (Huntington Beach/Servite HS) finished just five spots back of Cruse in 25th at 35:00.4

"The men raced their first 10k today, and the first five CSUMB men broke our school record," says coach Rhines. "Everyone is learning to run longer races, and they are learning well."

The Otters return to Northern California Oct. 15 to take part in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park. It will be their final tuneup before the CCAA Championship meet in Santa Rosa on Oct. 22.
