SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Otter women's soccer team will play its only “split” schedule of the season this weekend when it hosts regional contender Cal Poly Pomona Friday (Oct. 7) before heading to the Bay area to tackle Cal State East Bay Sunday (Oct. 9).
While it won't exactly be Darth Vader and Obi–Wan Kenobi, Friday's match between the Broncos and the Otters will feature a classic battle of student versus teacher when Otter Head Coach
Erin Reinke meets her former mentor, Cal Poly Head Coach Isabella Harvey. Reinke was Harvey's top assistant for three seasons before taking the reins at CSUMB.
“The team will be ready to play against a strong Pomona team,” says Reinke. “They're capable of getting back on track this weekend, but they have to stick together as a team and believe that winning is in reach. We need to show up as a team ready to compete.”
After hosting the Broncos, the Otters will begin their second round of play against CCAA North Division foes when they meet the Pioneers of CSUEB. East Bay came from behind to take a 2–1 decision when the teams first met at the Otters Sports Complex on Sept. 11. Junior forward
Gabriella Bozzo (Salinas HS) scored the Otter goal.
Otter Women's Soccer Odds & Ends
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKING: Cal Poly Pomona's visit brings the Otters an opportunity to pick up their first win over a regionally–ranked opponent. In their six–plus seasons, the Otters have not defeated a regionally–ranked opponent.
THE MARK OF ZAMBRANO: “Z” no longer stands for Zorro—at CSUMB it stands for Zambrano. Junior goalkeeper
Diana Zambrano (La Puente/Mt. SAC) made her first two NCAA starts over the weekend and posted consecutive seven save efforts at UCSD and Cal State San Bernardino. That is a season high for Otter goalkeepers in 2011.
GETTING OFF THE SCHNEID: The Otters created some opportunities last weekend, but their goal drought extended to five matches, matching their longest such streak ever.
