CHICO, Calif. — What some felt was a dubious red card on Friday and a major impact Sunday as Chico State put three behind the normally stalwart Cal State Monterey Bay defense to pick up a 3–1 men's soccer victory at Chico's University Soccer Stadium.
Senior defender
Eli Zamora (Encino/Crespi HS) was not available Sunday after drawing a straight red Friday at Chico. His absence was felt as Chico State avenged a 2–1 Otter victory last month in Seaside.
“We were simply our own worst enemy today,” said CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Cummings. “Our defense had a shocker today and we couldn't connect anything attacking.”
Chico struck first when Ferid Celosmanovic scored his ninth goal of the season by volleying home a Ryan Struckmeyer pass in the ninth minute. But the Otter struck back less than 10 minutes later when
Max Brixey (Truckee HS) found himself alone in the middle of the box after some fine setup work from
Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Hancock JC) and
Cody Lutz (Livermore/Granada HS).
Chico kept the pressure on throughout the first half, but the Otters looked like they were going to weather the storm until Adam Black scored his first goal one minute from time to give the Wildcats a 2–1 lead at the break. Barely 10 minutes after the interval, Octavio Guzman created a turnover and beat Otter goalkeeper
Cory Calder (South Lake Tahoe/Cabrillo College) on a breakaway to account for the final margin.
CSUMB returns home to close out the 2011 season next weekend hosting Cal State L.A. Friday (Oct. 28) at 12:30 p.m. and Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday (Oct. 30) at 3 p.m. Both contests are part of men's women's doubleheader action.
