CSUMB Falls In Five To Humboldt State

– The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team battled strong but fell to the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State in five sets on Friday at Lumberjack Arena.  The final scores were 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-9.

“We lost tonight but were not losers,” said Head Coach Jody Garry. “We are a group of talented athletes who need to play with confidence in ourselves and our teammates. I know we can.”

Senior middle blocker Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee/Tahoe Truckee HS) led all hitters with 20 kills.  Sophomore middle blocker Lily Staight (Vista/Rancho Buena Vista HS) recorded a career-high 12 kills and a .393 attack percentage.  Junior outside hitter Rachel Freeno (Alta Loma/Alta Loma HS) notched a season-best 17 kills and 24 digs.

Despite recording 17 kills to the Jacks' eight, the Otters dropped the opening set 25-22. The set consisted of seven tied scores and five lead changes.  Freeno registered six kills and senior Rheann Fall added four kills.

The Otters broke free in the second set on a 9-3 run to even the sets at one with a 25-18 win.  The CSUMB middle blockers dominated with Lashbrook nabbing a .857 attack percentage (6-0-7) while Staight turned in a .636 (7-0-11). 

HSU came back in the third set with a 25-20 win.  The Otters saw the Jacks take a quick lead and tried to play catch-up, even closing the gap to two points at 20-18.  Lashbrook led CSUMB with six kills.

CSUMB forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.  The Otters showed a balance attack with Freeno and senior Lauren Shacklock (Tehachapi/Tehachapi HS) each chipping in three kills to lead CSUMB.

Attacking errors haunted CSUMB in the fifth set as HSU clinch the match with a 15-9 win.  The Otters finished with five hitting errors to the Jacks one. 

HSU's Oceana Matsubu recorded 18 kills and 19 digs while Alexa Rosendale chipped in 15 kills and 16 digs.

The Otters travel to Rohnert Park for a match-up against Sonoma State on Saturday, Oct. 22 before heading back to the Kelp Bed next weekend. First serve is 7 p.m.
