SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Junior goalkeeper Cory Calder (South Lake Tahoe/Cabrillo College) made his first NCAA start a memorable one Sunday, stopping an early PK and an overtime breakaway to set the stage for Cal State Monterey Bay's 1–0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino at Coyote Premier Field.

The Otters (4–4–1, 4–3–1 CCAA) picked up their first road win of 2011 and kept pace in a tight CCAA North Division race. San Bernardino slipped to 3–6–0 and 2–6–0 with the loss.

Sophomore forward Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Hancock College) scored a working man's goal just 33 seconds from the end of the first overtime. Perez won a scramble for the ball in the box, knocked it to himself then powered a strike through the hands of Coyote goalkeeper Ron Shviro for the match–winner.

“Our depth and our fitness showed today, especially in overtime” said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. “We used our entire bench and a lot of guys stepped up, especially with our injury situation.”

Nobody stepped up bigger than Calder, who subbed for senior Sam Campanelli (Palmdale/Highland HS) after Campanelli went down late Friday at UC San Diego. Calder did more than just acquit himself well in his first start, he made several key plays that gave the Otters a chance to earn the spoils at the end.

Calder's first big play came within the opening 15 minutes when San Bernardino was awarded a penalty kick. Martin Esqueda took the spot kick for the Coyotes, but Calder made the save to keep the match scoreless.

Calder came up big again in overtime, thwarting a Coyote breakaway by making his fifth save of the day with less than three minutes remaining, setting the stage for Perez's match–winner.

The end result were the first road points of the season for CSUMB, which had come so close with three one–goal losses on the road before Sunday.

“We've been knocking on the door for this win, but the little things always cost us,” said Cummings. “Today, we stuck together, took care of the details and everybody played their part to earn this victory.”

Things won't get easier for CSUMB as it return to the Otter Sports Complex to take on CCAA South Division co–leader Cal Poly Pomona Friday at 12:30 p.m. It will be the opener of a men's/women's doubleheader.
