Julia Ashen added nine kills and a .562 attack percentage to the Otter effort Saturday night.
BOX SCORE
CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team earned a split in its two–day trip to Los Angeles by sweeping Cal State Dominguez Hills 25–23, 25–23, 25–21 Saturday night at the Torodome in Carson.
Seniors
Rheann Fall (Elk Grove/St. Francis HS) and
Melanie Lashbrook (Truckee HS) led CSUMB with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Senior setter
Monique Sena (Valinda/Bishop Amat HS) added a 31–assist, 11–dig double–double to go along with a match–high three aces.
Freshman outside hitter
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) continued her midseason emergence by collecting nine kills and posting a .562 attack percentage.
“I was impressed with the focus and fight the team brought tonight, said CSUMB Head Coach
Jody Garry. “We took care of the little things and served tough."
Despite hitting .341 in the first set, the Otters had trouble shaking a pesky Toro side that more than matched the effort by hitting .344. But four kills by Lashbrook and two by Ashen sparked an early 8–3 run that kept Dominguez Hills playing catch–up for the rest of the set.
In the second set, two Sena aces sparked another early Otter surge, this one keeping the Toros at bay for a comfortable win. Dominguez Hills led as late as 16–14 in the third set, but Ashen's final kill of the match launched a decisive 7–0 run that put the Otters ahead to stay. Fittingly, Fall and Lashbrook combined for a block on match point to seal the win.
CSUMB (7–9, 4–9 CCAA) continues its four–match road swing by heading to the other end of California to face Humboldt State and Sonoma State next weekend. The Otters return home to tackle Cal Poly Pomona Friday, Oct. 28.
