SEASIDE, Calif. -- It's more than a little bit ironic that the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team has given arguably its best performances of the season at the Otter Sports Complex yet enters this weekend's homestand still looking for its first home win of the season. The Otters delivered another solid effort in front of the home crowd last week only to see regionally–ranked Cal Poly Pomona spoil the upset bid with a fluky score in a 1–0 Bronco win.
“I thought we played very well overall against Pomona, we just couldn't put the ball in,” says first year Head Coach
Erin Reinke. “We need more consistent team efforts such as that and the results will follow.”
The Otters will look to turn good performances into points this weekend when they host the top and bottom of the CCAA North Division. Things start Friday (Oct. 14) with division leader Sonoma State in town for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff. Sunday (Oct. 16) brings last place Humboldt State to the Otters Sports Complex for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Both matches are part of men's/women's doubleheader action.
Otter Women's Soccer Odds & Ends
LOOKING FOR A SWEEP: The Otters will be looking for their first–ever sweep of a season series when they host Humboldt State Sunday afternoon. CSUMB defeated the Lumberjacks 1–0 in Arcata on Sept. 16 on a goal by
Natalie Argueta (Costa Mesa HS).
GETTING THEIR SHOTS OFF: After a fortnight of relative quiet, the Otter offense showed signs of life last weekend, posting double–digit shots in both matches. Their 12 shots against Cal Poly Pomona were the second most they've recorded this season (16 at William Jessup University).
GILLIO LOWERS GAA: Freshman goalkeeper
Kendra Gillio (San Jose/Valley Christian HS) allowed just two goals last weekend to lower her goals against average to 1.49.
