ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Behind sophomore #Davion Berry# career-high 31 points, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team broke its seven-game losing streak with a 98-90 victory over Sonoma State on Saturday night.
"We slowed the game down and were able to score 98 points," said head coach
Rob Bishop. "The guys battled tonight for 40 minutes and good things happened for us. We got great controbutions from the whole team tonight."
The Otters dominiated in the first half, going 17-for-27 from the field and 9-for-11 from beyond the arc to take a 52-34 lead at halftime. The Seawolves were held to just 36.7 percent (11-for-30) from the field and were unable to connect on any of their 11 3-point shots.
CSUMB took its largest lead in the 14th minute on Berry's 3-pointer to make it 70-43. The host came barreling back with a 30-10 run in just a seven minute period to close the gap to 80-75 with five minutes remaining in the game.
The Otters saw their lead dwindle to only a single point at the 3:55 mark when SSU's Ben Washington knocked down a 3-pointer. Phillips answered with his sixth 3-pointer of the night.
CSUMB made five of their six free-throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.
The Otters shot a program-best 73.7 percent from behind the 3-point arc with Berry and senior #Darroll Phillips# each knocking down six. Freshmen #Kyle Wong# and #James Thomas Jr.# added one 3-pointer apiece. Phillips finished with 24 points and junior #Andrew Castro# contributed nine points.
CSUMB hits the road for another two-game road trip next weekend, starting with a showdown at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
