SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball coach #Rob Bishop# has announced the signing of a pair of recruits to join the program for the 2010-11 campaign. Former Mills High School standout Kyle Wong and Woodcrest High School star Troy Watkins will be wearing the Otter blue and gold uniform next year.
“We are very excited to have signed both Kyle and Troy,” Bishop said. “They are outstanding young men who happen to be very good basketball players. Both come from wining programs and will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact on our program. Both of these young men have been well coached through their basketball careers and have a very good understanding of the game.”
Kyle Wong, a 5-10 point guard, was named All-Metro honorable mention after averaging 17.5 points per game for the season. In the final 10 games of his high school career, Wong averaged 21.9 points a game, which led to a League Co-MVP and San Mateo County Player of the Year.
“Kyle brings the ability to break down a defense and create for teammates that will be very valuable to us,” Bishop said. “Kyle is a very smart point guard who will get the opportunity to play right away. With the graduation of two senior point guards he will one of only two point guards in our program next and have the opportunity to play right away. Kyle can stretch defenses with his ability to shoot three's at a high percentage. Otter fans are going to enjoy watching Kyle play in the Kelp bed for the next four years.”
Troy Watkins, a 6-4 guard, holds the school single season scoring record with 700 points. He averaged 28.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game his senior year. Watkins was named to the All-State second team and All-CIF first team.
“Troy is an explosive guard who possess the ability score in a variety of different ways,” Bishop said. “He is extremely athletic and will no doubt provide Otter fans with some high flying dunks during his career. Troys size and athleticism will help him to make an impact right away next year as a freshman. Troy comes from a wining program bringing with him an attitude and drive to win that will be a very valuable to our team for years to come. Troy has enjoyed an outstanding high school career that has helped him prepare for his next big challenge, suiting up for the Otters.”
“I am very excited about the upcoming 2010-11 season,” Bishop said. “We will have a young team made up of mostly freshman and sophomores but we will be fun to watch. We have another tough conference schedule that includes defending Division II National Champions Cal Poly Pomona, and CCAA Conference Tournament Champions Cal State San Bernardino. Even though we will have the youngest team we have ever had here next year, I look forward to significant improvement on the court. This will be a very exciting team to watch next season and we hope to see you all at the Kelp Bed.”
