SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team's bats came alive as they defeated Patten University, 11-8, in the lone game Saturday afternoon at the Otter Baseball Field.
Racking up the win with six complete innings pitched was senior right-handed pitcher, #Patrick McClain#. Senior third basemen #Jacob Flores# went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshmen #Kyle Espinola# also went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Freshmen shortstop #Ronnie Fhurong# went 3-for-6 with three RBI. Junior #Andrew DeGarmo# went 2-for-2. Senior #Ryan Chagonjian# had two RBI and two runs scored.
The Otters jumped on top, in the second inning with Flores' single through the left side, then he later stole second. Chagonjian drew the walk. Espinola followed the walk up with a hard hit single through the left side, advancing both runners. With the bases loaded, senior designated hitter #Joey Friedman# walked scoring Flores and advancing the runners 90 feet closer to home. The next run was pushed across when freshmen #Alex Mangubat# watched four straight balls, third of the inning, off the arm of Patten pitcher Dakota Hatch.
In the bottom of the third, CSUMB jumped out with an 8-0 lead with the six run inning. Flores started off the inning once again with a single to center field. Sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# was hit by a pitch advancing Flores. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Chagonjian singled to right field racking up two RBI. Espinola tripled to right center scoring Chagonjian. Friedman had a hard hit single bringing in another Otter run. Taking advantage of a fielder's choice and an error by the pitcher, Friedman came around to score. Fhurong ripped a single through the right side scoring senior #Brent Sargenti#.
Patten got on the board in the fourth with a homerun from designated hitter Nick Robertson.
The fifth inning came with the opportunity to score for Patten. Luke Heil started off the inning with a hard hit single through the left side. Right fielder Stephan Rivera had a single, advancing Heil. The runners moved closer, with a sacrifice bunt. With runners on second and third, the Lions pushed one across when shortstop David Whiteside went to the right side, scoring Heil from third.
In the sixth, Patten strung together two hits, one of which was a home run off of the bat of left fielder Jermaine Collins, for two runs to make the score 8-4.
The Lions continued to score in the seventh with a double down the left field line and two singles to left field and right center. Patten scored two runs off of the three hits and one walk.
In the seventh inning, Mangubat was hit on his shoulder with a pitch to start off the inning. DeGarmo singled up the middle. Fhurong singled to center field scoring Mangubat from second, making the score 9-6.
Patten put pressure on CSUMB when the Lions scored two runs in the top of the eighth and left the bases loaded.
The Otters answered back and put two runs back on the board, starting when senior #Justin Aguilera# singled to center field. With a sacrifice bunt, Aguilera advanced to second. Barber doubled to left center bringing Aguilera home. For the second time, DeGarmo singled through the left side advancing the Barber. Fhurong singled to right field bringing in yet another Otter run.
The Otters finished with 17 hits on the day.
CSUMB travels to San Francisco for a non-conference match-up on Wednesday, March 10 at 2 p.m.
