CSUMB Drops Doubleheader to Visiting Stanislaus

SEASIDE, Calif. –
The Cal State Monterey baseball team faced-off with Cal State Stanislaus on Otter turf for the series doubleheader, dropping the first game, 16-6, and the nightcap, 5-2.

Freshman second baseman #Nolan Murray# went 4-for-7 on the day with three runs scored and one run batted in.

CSUMB travels to Turlock on Sunday, March 28, to face the Warriors for the conclusion of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series starting at 12 p.m.

GAME 1
Box Score

Loading the bases three times in the first inning, the Warriors brought in three runs on two hits.

Murray started off the first inning with a bang for the Otters with a single up the middle. Freshman shortstop #Ronnie Fhurong# put down a perfect push bunt to find his way successfully on first base advancing Murray. Senior #Ryan Chagonjian# advanced the runners with a ground ball to first base. Senior catcher #Joey Friedman# singled to left field scoring Murray from third for the Otters first run of the game.

In the bottom of the second the Otters got on the board once again with senior #Jason Okamoto#'s home run to right center.

The Warriors added three runs in the third with a lead-off double and three hits that followed.

The Otters struck again in the bottom of the fourth, this time posting three runs. Starting the inning off with freshman #Kyle Espinola# hit a single to left field then Murray hit a RBI double to left center. Fhurong  followed it up with a double of his own to left center. Senior third baseman #Jacob Flores# hit a hard hit single to right center bringing in Fhurong.

Stanislaus scored three more runs on three hits in the fifth making the score 12-5.

With one out, Flores battled for the walk. Chagonjian singled through the right side advancing Flores to second. But the Otters inning was cut short by an inning ending double play.

Stanislaus added another run in the eighth inning off of a Warrior home run.

CSUMB started off with a single down the right field line by freshman #Thomas George#. Espinola singled to right field advancing George to third. Okamoto picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Warriors picked up three more runs in the top of the ninth with four hits and one Otter error.

The Otters recorded 13 hits in the opener.

Espinola, Flores, Fhurong and Murray each recorded two hits.

GAME 2

In the top of the first the Warriors got on the board with one ball that was blasted over the right field wall.

The Otters put a run on the board in the first when Murray scored from third on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Flores.

In the second inning senior pitcher #Justin Aguilera# started a momentum changing double play for the Otters.

With the swing of momentum, the Otters took their first lead of the day in the second as they loaded the bases. Senior #Brent Sargenti# scored for the Otters with the sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of junior #Andrew DeGarmo#.

Stanislaus struck back in the top of the third, scoring three runs on four hits.

The Otters shut-down a safety squeeze in the fifth, preventing another Warrior run. An earlier run was added to the board while the Warriors recorded three hits making the final score 5-2.

Freshman #Tyler Young# went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
