ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Sonoma State scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on Friday afternoon to top Cal State Monterey Bay, 8-7, in the opener of the teams three-game series.
The Seawolves took advantage of two CSUMB errors and a pass ball to score the game-winning run.
The Otters fall to 5-21 overall and 1-16 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action while Sonoma State (10-14, 3-10 CCAA) picks up its third conference victory.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 3-0 victory in the first inning on two doubles, a single and passed ball.
The Otters got on the board in their next at-bat when freshman #Tyler Young# hit a RBI single to right center to score sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# who singled to lead off the inning.
Freshman #Nolan Murray# reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to make it 3-2.
CSUMB tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fourth on two hits and a Sonoma State error. Freshman #Alex Mangubat# hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior #Chris Lopiccolo#. Mangubat moved to third on a single by Murray and scored on freshman
Ronnie Fhurong's groundout to shortstop.
In the fifth, senior #Joey Friedman# homered to left field to give the Otters their first lead of the game 4-3.
Senior #Jacob Flores# hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Murray who reached first on a single, 5-3.
Sonoma State's Kyle Jones hit a home run in the seventh to make it 5-4.
The Otters answered back in the eighth inning when Fhurong hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run blast to left field, 7-4.
In the seventh, the Seawolves tied the game at 7-7. Jones recorded his second home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth to score two runs after Bobby Cozine hit a RBI double earlier in the inning.
Otters left eight runners on base while the Seawolves stranded nine.
Senior #Patrick McClain# started for the Otters and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Freshman #Corey Lathram# took the loss after pitching two-thirds of an inning.
The Otters will face the Seawolves tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
