SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team took on Cal State L.A. on Otter turf Sunday, dropping the first game 5-4 and the nightcap 6-3.
For the second consecutive day, sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# went yard for the Otters, but this time twice over the left field fence. On the day, he went 5-for-7 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Otters return to play on Friday, March 19 at Sonoma State for the California Collegiate Athletic Association series. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 2 p.m.
GAME 1

The Otters jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second with a lead-off walk drawn by senior first baseman #Ryan Chagonjian#. Porcella-Smeds hit a first pitch single through the left side, advancing Chagoonjian to second. Porcella-Smeds was out at second on the throw from the Golden Eagle's pitcher breaking-up the double play. Chagonjian advanced to third and senior #Joey Friedman# occupied first. Junior center fielder #Andrew DeGarmo# singled through the left side earning his first RBI of the day.
CSUMB added another run in the third. For the second inning in-a-row the Otters started off with a lead-off walk, this time by freshman #Ronnie Fhurong#. Fhurong stole second and ended up on third via past ball. Senior third baseman #Jacob Flores# singled up the middle giving the Otters the second run of the day.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the top of the fourth with one run on one hit and a stolen base.
In the top of the fifth, CSULA added three runs to pull ahead of the Otters. The Golden Eagles capitalized on the opportunity's the Otters gave them. Combining two hits and a throwing error by CSUMB's catcher with the bases loaded they combined to bring in the runs.
Once again in the seventh CSULA added another run on one hit and a throwing error by CSUMB's third baseman.
CSUMB made its biggest threat of the day in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs on three hits. Freshman #Alex Mangubat# started it off with a hard hit single to right field. Freshman #Nolan Murray# singled through the left side advancing Mangubat to second. Right off the pitching change, Fhurong singled to center field pushing across Mangubat. With runners on first-and-third, Fhurong drew the throw from the catcher and got in a pickle allowing Murray to score for the final run of the game.
Murray, Fhurong, Porcella-Smeds and DeGarmo each had two hits for the Otters.
The Otters out hit CSULA 11-6 but committed two errors in the loss.
GAME 2

The top of the first, the Golden Eagles wasted no time. CSULA loaded the bases, then left fielder Matt Miraldi came up clutch with a hit to center field. Freshmen Jordan Castro blasted a grand slam over the left field fence to make the score 5-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Otters started it off when Chagonjian had a hard hit single through the right side. Porcella-Smeds came up to bat and crushes a 0-2 pitch over the left field fence, just missing the scoreboard, making the score 5-2.
The Golden Eagles added another run to the tally in the top of the sixth with one hit and one walk.
In the bottom of the seventh, Porcella-Smeds jacked his second home run of the game to make the final score for the Otters, 6-3.
Porcella-Smeds went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Murray had two hits for the CSUMB.
