Sophomore Jordan Porcella-Smeds hits first collegiate homer, a grand slam

SEASIDE, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped a twinbill to the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles on Saturday at the Otter Baseball Field.  The Otters fell 3-2 in the first before dropping a 17-7 decision in the nightcap.

Senior #Joey Friedman# led the Otters, going 4-for-8 with a double on the day. In game two, sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# crushed his first collegiate home run, a grand slam over the right field wall. 

The Otters return to the field tomorrow for another doubleheader against CSULA.  First pitch is 10 a.m.

After three scoreless innings, the Eagles scored on Ramirez's fielder's choice to second base after Quick doubled to left center to lead off the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman #Tyler Young# and senior #Ryan Chagonjian# singled to set things up for Mangubat, who tripled off the center field wall putting the Otters up 2-1.

The Eagles answered back when lead-off hitter Mark Sunga homered over the left center wall to tie the game at 2-2. 

With one out in the top of the ninth, CSULA's Jesus Campos doubled down the right field line.  Joe Park drove him in with a double of his own down the left field line.

Senior right-hander #Patrick McClain# pitched eight innings, giving up two runs and striking out four batters.

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning after recording four hits.

The Otters retaliated in their first at bat. Senior #Jacob Flores# hit a RBI double to left center after back-to-back singles by freshmen #Ronnie Fhurong# and Young. Red-shirt freshman #Alex Mangubat# was rewarded first after being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Porcella-Smeds crushed the ball over the right field wall for his first collegiate home run and tied the game at 5-5.

CSUMB took a brief lead in the third inning on Friedman's RBI single to third base, 6-5.

The Eagles' offense exploded in the fourth, scoring seven runs on six hits and one CSUMB error, 12-6 CSULA.

A grand slam by CSULA's Sam Wiley extended the lead to 16-6 in the fifth. 

The Otters scored their final run of the game bottom of the fifth when Mangubat scored on an error by CSULA's catcher.

The Eagles added one last run in the top of the ninth when Castro homered to right field.

CSULA's Matt Strom earned the win despite giving up seven runs, six earned, and striking out five batters.  Junior #Scott Tully# took his third loss of the season after nine runs, eight earned runs in 3.1 innings.
