SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team split today's doubleheader against No. 15 Sonoma State. The Otters won game two, 2-1, after falling to the Seawolves in the Saturday opener, 14-6, at the Otter Baseball Field.
Senior infielder #Jacob Flores# went 5-for-7 with two doubles, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. In the first game, senior #Ryan Chagonjian# went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
In the nightcap, the Otters took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the second. Flores watched four balls go across the plate, while senior #Justin Aguilera# hit a high bouncing chopper down the third base line and reached on a throwing error. Chagonjian put down a sac bunt to advance the runners. Freshman #Jeff Owen# hit a sac fly to deep right field, scoring Flores from third.
In the fourth inning, Flores went yard over the center field wall to bring the Otters lead to 2-0.
A sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh prevented a shutout.
Sonoma State left twelve runners on base in the nightcap.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early lead in game one, with a walk drawn by senior Ryan Stevens then followed with a blast over the center field fence by senior Austin Hogans. The Seawolves scored seven more runs before the Otters got on the board.
Flores hit a double to left center field. Flores advanced to third on a pass ball. Chagonjian hit a blooper to center field to score Flores.
Sonoma State scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Otters added two runs in their side of the eighth and added three more runs in the bottom of the ninth before the game was over.
CSUMB travels to Cal State East Bay on Tuesday, Feb. 9 for a single game starting at 2 P.M.
